False AI intelligence report nearly triggered a US naval interception
CNN reports that a chatbot invented the cargo of a Chinese vessel, and that planes were airborne before officials caught the error.
An intelligence report circulated across the US military in spring 2026 stated that a Chinese ship in the Middle East was carrying components for a nuclear weapons programme, CNN reported on Thursday, citing sources familiar with the episode. The report was false.
The military drew up plans to intercept the vessel. Armed personnel prepared to board it and aircraft were in the air, according to the reporting, before officials established that the document had been produced with a chatbot that invented the cargo.
An analyst at a special operations command appears to have used the tool twice. First to identify what the ship was carrying, which it got wrong, and then again to format the invented detail into a standard intelligence product that read like any other.
That second step is what let the error travel. A fabricated finding wrapped in the conventions of a routine report carries no visible marker, and the military's own review reportedly did not catch it before the operation was under way.
The account is CNN's, sourced to people familiar with it rather than to any on-record official, and the Pentagon has not confirmed it publicly. Engadget and Futurism carried it the same day. An interception of a Chinese vessel could have brought the two states into direct conflict.
