US, China agree to open AI dialogue by November
A White House readout from the Trump-Xi summit says the two countries will hold official AI talks and set up a channel for AI incidents.
The White House said the United States and China agreed to hold an official dialogue on artificial intelligence by November. The countries also agreed to a communication channel for AI-related incidents, according to a readout cited on X by the reporter kyleichan.
Axios reported the agreement separately, describing it as a "'super intelligence' dialogue amid AI tensions." Reuters said the arrangement came alongside a $30 billion tariff cut announced during the same visit by Xi Jinping.
Julian Gewirtz, a Harvard Belfer Center fellow, said on Bloomberg Television that the meeting delivered the optics Trump wanted. Gewirtz, a former White House China director, added there was "little visible progress" on the substantive disputes between the two countries.
Neither government detailed what the new dialogue would cover beyond incident communication. It is not clear when the first session will take place.
