Trump and Amodei clash over AI pace at White House dinner
The pair's first private dinner surfaced deep disagreement over how fast AI should advance, days after Anthropic's technology was labeled a supply-chain risk, La Voce di New York reported.
President Trump hosted Anthropic chief executive Dario Amodei for a private White House dinner Sunday. It was their first one-on-one meeting after months of public disagreement over the pace of AI development, La Voce di New York reported. Bloomberg reported that the dinner came as fresh disclosures about a wider range of AI breaches added to safety concerns. Amodei has pushed for "pacing" the development of the most advanced models and stronger guardrails. TechCrunch reported the meeting had been scheduled a day earlier.
Relations between the two sides soured after the Pentagon designated Anthropic's technology a national supply-chain risk this year. That followed the company's refusal to let its models be used in autonomous-weapons or surveillance systems, La Voce di New York reported. The dispute led to a roughly two-and-a-half-week suspension of two Anthropic models, and a 2-1 appeals court ruling upheld the Pentagon's authority.
Zuckerberg, OpenAI president Greg Brockman and Amodei are set to join Trump and House Speaker Mike Johnson at an expanded White House AI meeting on Tuesday. Google's Sundar Pichai, Nvidia's Jensen Huang and xAI's Elon Musk are possible attendees, CNBC reported.
