Newsom signs 7 bills tightening oversight of California data centres

Governor Gavin Newsom signed seven bills regulating data centres in California, Reuters reported on Monday. The package imposes requirements on electricity costs, water use and local oversight, according to a summary of the report carried by Techmeme. Reuters' own legal account carried the same line.
Both accounts trace to the same outlet. Techmeme credited the Reuters reporter Nichola Groom, and the Reuters legal account posted its own headline on the signing. The story rests on one outlet, and neither account quotes the governor's office.
The bills reached Newsom's desk this month. CalMatters reported before the signing that the bills would require new environmental reviews, new energy and water use reporting, and electricity rates meant to keep data centre power costs off household bills. Two of the bills are AB 2383 and SB 886.
Newsom vetoed a data centre water bill last year, and CalMatters reported in August that it was unclear whether he would sign this year's version.
