DoorDash opens a waitlist for ordering food by text in Apple Messages
DoorDash says its new AI agent builds carts, remembers "skip cilantro" and checks out inside an Apple Messages thread, with no app. US users can join a waitlist at doordash.com/text.
DoorDash launched a text-based AI ordering agent on 30 September that works inside Apple's Messages app, Bloomberg reported. According to 9to5Mac, users can text a specific dish or ask for suggestions based on their mood, and the agent searches nearby restaurants and scans their menus.
The agent replies with suggestions and photos taken from restaurant pages, 9to5Mac said. DoorDash says the system learns preferences over time, such as dietary restrictions or "skip cilantro", and can handle group orders with mixed diets. Users can text "order my usual" without repeating the details.
Checkout and payment happen in the Messages thread, so the DoorDash app is not required, according to 9to5Mac. The feature is US-only at launch and sits behind a waitlist at doordash.com/text. Access "might arrive right away, or it may take some time" depending on demand.
DoorDash's announcement also covers groceries. The company says its Ask DoorDash assistant builds grocery baskets five times faster, with 50 percent higher basket value and 60 percent more items than traditional orders. These figures are DoorDash's own and no outside party has verified them.
DoorDash also announced a connector that lets companies wire the ordering system into AI tools they already use, for team lunches and office restocking, with a broader beta waitlist opening the same day. Co-founder Andy Fang said managing tasks like ordering lunch or groceries "shouldn't feel like work". Nobody has yet reported independent tests of the agent.
