Bona sets October 23 release for AI‑made feature film

The 100-minute film is billed as the first fully AI-generated feature to clear China's film regulator, according to Zhao. Bona says every character is an original digital creation, with no digital copies of real actors, he reported.
China's National Film Administration granted the project a public-screening license in April, Caixin Global reported at the time. The 90-minute cut shown then was classified as an animated film, because regulators have no separate category yet for AI-generated content.
The project began in 2024 as a 12-episode series on the ByteDance-owned platform Douyin, made with ByteDance's Jimeng AI video tool, Zhao said. He called the two-year path from a mobile short series to a cinema release evidence that "the company that walked that road is not a healthy one," without elaborating on what he meant.
