Researchers track an AI 'agent fleet' asking Amap for zoo directions

Researchers say many parallel AI agents, apparently on Tencent servers, query Alibaba's Amap for routes to a park, a zoo and a hospital. They see no sign the agents talk.

Independent researchers have found what they call an "agent fleet" that appears to run on Tencent's infrastructure and target Alibaba's Amap map service, TechCrunch reported on 5 October. They spotted it in traffic logs from urlquery, a domain-scanning service. The report names no owner or purpose, and no other outlet had confirmed the findings when this was written.

According to TechCrunch, the agents ask Amap for directions to different entrances of public places, including a park, a zoo and a hospital. One researcher distinguished a fleet from a swarm: "many parallel agents on the same kind of task, with no sign of communication between them." That, the researchers argue, is what separates this from coordinated multi-agent behaviour.

The agents made little effort to hide, TechCrunch says, and left records in the scanning logs. The report ties the find to tighter monitoring for rogue agents since the Hugging Face incident. Researchers caution the activity may be benign compared with what could come.

What the agents are for is unknown. The observed queries are routine map lookups. TechCrunch does not say who runs the fleet or how large it is, or whether Tencent or Alibaba has commented. Until the operator or a vendor responds, the account rests on the researchers' reading of the logs.
