White House names Clayton to lead AI 'Super Intelligence Force'

Director of National Intelligence Jay Clayton will lead a White House task force with 120 days to report on AI's risks and opportunities, the Wall Street Journal reported.

The White House has created a task force to examine AI's risks and opportunities, the Wall Street Journal reported on Saturday. It is to recommend what role the federal government should play in overseeing the technology, with a report due within 120 days. Reuters relayed the account, which cites the task force's head, Jay Clayton.

The group is known as the "Super Intelligence Force", and Clayton, who heads the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, told the Journal he would lead it. He would effectively serve as President Donald Trump's AI czar, according to Reuters. The report also cites a senior White House official. Bloomberg carried the story the same day, attributing it to the Journal.

The appointment follows earlier reporting. CBS News said on Thursday, citing sources, that Clayton was likely to be Trump's pick for AI czar while staying director of national intelligence. The commentator Andrew Curran wrote on X late Saturday that the task force had been renamed the SI Force, citing the Journal.

The Reuters account does not say who else sits on the task force, what budget or legal authority it has, or whether its report would bind agencies. We opened Reuters' version, not the Journal's paywalled article, and found no White House statement confirming the name. The 120-day clock would run into early next year if it started now.
