Crusoe drops $1.25 billion Boom turbine deal for data centers

The AI data center operator says turbines no longer fit its near-term power plans, Boom's chief executive said.

AI data center operator Crusoe Energy has ended a $1.25 billion agreement to buy natural gas turbines from Boom Supersonic, according to Boom's chief executive.

The deal covered 29 turbines rated at 42 megawatts each. It was meant to launch Boom's move into stationary power generation. Boom CEO Blake Scholl said turbines are "no longer part of Crusoe's near term primary power mix" at its sites, including one in Abilene, Texas. He added that "a launch partnership just didn't make sense."

Crusoe spokesperson Andrew Schmitt said the company picks power sources for each site individually, choosing among turbines, wind, solar, batteries and grid connections rather than committing to one technology. Crusoe raised $3.9 billion in recent funding. Boom has raised $300 million for the turbine unit and said other customers remain in its pipeline.

Boom had planned to deliver about 250 megawatts of turbine capacity by 2027 and 1 gigawatt by 2028, with Crusoe as its anchor customer. Losing that launch partner is a setback for Boom's push beyond supersonic aircraft into power generation. The company said its broader turbine pipeline is still intact, though that claim could not be independently confirmed.
