Databricks buys Row Zero, puts a spreadsheet inside Genie
Terms were not disclosed. Databricks said the acquisition gives its Genie agent a grid that business teams can pivot and model in.
Databricks said on Thursday it has acquired Row Zero, a cloud spreadsheet that connects to live data sources, and will build it into Genie, the company's agent product. Terms were not disclosed. Databricks said Row Zero will stay available as a standalone product.
Patrick Wendell, a Databricks co-founder and its vice-president of engineering, said in the release that a spreadsheet inside Genie is now "a must-have". Breck Fresen, Row Zero's founder and chief executive, said he built it because spreadsheets "needed to seamlessly connect to enterprise-scale data with governance". Both claims are the companies' own.
Row Zero was founded by former Amazon Web Services and Tableau engineers. It raised $10 million in May 2025 at an estimated $40 million valuation, TechCrunch reported. Its engine holds more than a million live rows, and Databricks said the grid will run on web, desktop and mobile across the major clouds.
Ali Ghodsi, the Databricks chief executive, told TechCrunch: "We intend to do many more acquisitions like this in the future." TechCrunch counted four earlier Databricks deals this year. It put the company at a $7 billion annualised revenue run rate, after a $5 billion raise last month.
