Gemini fully replaces Google Assistant on Android
9to5Google reported the assistant has been removed from phones, tablets and paired devices across the US and Europe, with no way to switch back.
Google Assistant has been removed from Android phones, tablets and paired devices including Wear OS watches, headphones and Android Auto systems across the US and Europe, 9to5Google reported Monday. Gemini now activates instead when users long-press the power button or swipe in from a screen corner, according to the outlet.
The "Switch to Google Assistant" option has disappeared from the Gemini app's settings, 9to5Google said. Google's own support documentation now tells users they can no longer use or switch back to the older assistant on a phone, tablet or paired device. No other outlet had independently reported the rollout as of Monday evening.
Google Nest and Home smart speakers are not affected yet, 9to5Google said, keeping the older assistant for now on those devices while the phone and tablet rollout continues.
Google originally planned the Assistant-to-Gemini switch for 2025 before pushing the deprecation into 2026 and setting a final timeline in August, according to 9to5Google's account of Google's own announcements. The move leaves Gemini as Google's only voice assistant on mobile hardware.
