Google starts testing Gemini Tasks mode on desktop, TestingCatalog says
Trusted testers are getting a Chat and Tasks switch in the Gemini desktop app, along with settings for which apps it may operate.
Google has begun giving trusted testers a Tasks mode in its Gemini desktop app, TestingCatalog reported on Thursday. The app now carries a switch between Chat and Tasks. The site said it does not yet have access to the mode itself, and Google has not announced it.
Nothing in the report comes from Google. TestingCatalog said the Tasks mode is reaching trusted testers, and that a production rollout could still take weeks or longer, depending on testing. The site tracks unreleased features in shipped apps, and its findings stand unconfirmed until a company ships them.
A new menu lets users set which applications Gemini may operate, TestingCatalog said, listing allowed and disallowed apps. An option to start a Gemini project from a folder has also become more prominent and appears to be entering trusted testing, the site said.
Tasks also carries an entry point to Gemini Live, the same as Chat. That could let users run computer-use tasks by voice while holding a conversation, TestingCatalog said. Google released Gemini 3.8 Live on September 15, describing asynchronous function calling and support for carrying out tasks during dialogue.
The Gemini app for Windows launched publicly earlier this month. TestingCatalog said the desktop app is moving beyond a chat client toward cross-app task execution and background work. Google has not said when, or whether, the Tasks mode will reach general users.
