Google tests AI shopping checkout with Flipkart in India
A small group of users in India can now buy smartphones and electronics through Flipkart without leaving Google's Gemini app or AI Mode, ahead of a wider October rollout.
Google is testing a "Buy" button on select Flipkart product listings inside Gemini and AI Mode in India, TechCrunch reported. It lets a limited set of users purchase smartphones, electronics and mobile accessories without leaving the AI interface. TechCrunch cited people familiar with the test and its own review of the feature.
Tapping the button routes shoppers into Flipkart's own checkout flow rather than a Google-hosted one, according to TechCrunch. That is a different approach from the Google-hosted checkout experience the company has shown before. Google plans a broader rollout in October, ahead of India's festive shopping season, TechCrunch said.
Asked about the test, Google gave TechCrunch a general statement. The company is "always testing new features and experiences to help people discover and connect with businesses more easily," it said, without confirming specifics of the Flipkart integration.
Google invested about $350 million in Flipkart, which Walmart owns, in 2024, according to TechCrunch.
