Google Photos adds Redact pen that pixelates sensitive details
The pen sits inside an upgraded Markup tool that Google is rolling out to Android users worldwide, alongside a set of vintage filters called Moods.
Google Photos has started rolling out a Redact pen that blurs or pixelates sensitive information in screenshots and images, 9to5Google and Engadget reported on Thursday. The pen is part of an upgraded Markup tool, which Engadget said is going out to Google Photos users on Android worldwide.
The same Markup update adds thickness sliders for the pen and highlighter and new fonts in the text tool, according to 9to5Google, whose report went up at 10am Pacific. Engadget's example was a car number plate turned into a pixelated block. Google has not said how long the rollout will take.
A second feature going out globally on Android is Moods, a set of filters 9to5Google described as having a nostalgic, vintage-inspired look. The named styles are Crisp 35mm, 2000's night, Retro contrast, Night light, Blue Haze, Any Minimalist and Rich textures, each with a slider.
Two other changes are narrower. Fifteen new Remix templates, covering red carpet shots, birthday cards and photo booth strips, are reaching Android and iOS in selected countries. The Wardrobe feature, which builds a clothing catalogue from a user's photos, is now in Brazil, India and the United States on both systems, and 9to5Google said it needs an AI Pro or AI Ultra subscription.
