McDonald's says AI voice Archy takes drive‑thru orders above 90% accuracy

Bloomberg reported the system handles English and Spanish, and Restaurant Technology News said the chain is committing $8.5 billion to modernising restaurants.

McDonald's says its new drive-thru voice, Archy, takes orders in English and Spanish with an accuracy rate above 90%, Bloomberg reported on Thursday. The figure is the company's own, and no one outside McDonald's has published a test of it.

Archy is part of ArchIQ, a restaurant technology programme built with Google Cloud, Restaurant Technology News reported on Wednesday. The site said edge-computing hardware is going into thousands of restaurants, with the rollout in the United States expected to finish in 2027.

McDonald's is committing $8.5 billion to franchisees through 2036, about $5 billion of it by the end of 2030 through rent relief and capital contributions, according to Restaurant Technology News. The site said ArchIQ draws on operations in more than 8,000 restaurants in China.

The company says Archy could free at least 50 employee hours a week per restaurant as it scales, and that early test restaurants showed customer-satisfaction results above national trends. Both claims come from McDonald's management, and Restaurant Technology News did not name an executive.

McDonald's ran an earlier automated order-taking trial with IBM at more than 100 restaurants and ended it in 2024. Restaurant Technology News did not say how many restaurants run Archy now. The company has not published the method behind the 90% figure.
