Meta adds opt‑out for smart glasses' visual data storage
A new toggle stops Meta from storing images its AI features capture on smart glasses, though the company says human reviewers may still see that data unless it is off.
Meta added a setting that lets smart glasses owners stop the company from storing visual data from AI features, Engadget reported. The feature covers data captured during tasks like Live AI and object identification. It is separate from photos and videos taken with the camera's recording light on.
Meta said the stored visual data may go through human review, according to Engadget. That review happens as part of training and improving its AI models. Without the opt-out, footage from tasks like translating a menu is not reviewed by automated systems alone.
To opt out, users open the Meta AI app and go to their glasses' settings. They select Meta AI, then toggle off "store visual data from AI experiences." The steps repeat for each pair of glasses a person owns. The glasses must be out of their case and connected to a phone to change the setting.
Turning the setting off can disable features that rely on stored visual data, Engadget reported. That includes visual reminders that reference what a user was looking at earlier.
