Meta's Muse hits 5 million downloads in 22 days, Sensor Tower says
Meta's AI app passed 5 million US and Canada downloads faster than ChatGPT, Grok or Claude did, per Sensor Tower, as OpenAI answers with Dots.
Meta's Muse AI assistant has passed 5 million downloads in 22 days, according to Sensor Tower data reported by 9to5Mac. Sensor Tower puts ChatGPT's equivalent milestone at 56 days, Grok's at 103 and Claude's at 492. Muse is available only in the US and Canada, on iOS and Android.
Sensor Tower says Muse held the top spot on the US App Store for 12 straight days and overtook ChatGPT. It also points to Meta's marketing: ad spend rose on 16 September, the day downloads jumped 73%, and Muse took up to half of Meta's house ad impressions over two weeks. The figures are third-party estimates, and much of the growth may be promotion.
OpenAI's reply came at its DevDay. Sam Altman announced Dots, a "real-deal AI" agent powered by GPT-6 Astra, The Verge reported, calling it a shot at Meta. AI Weekly reported that one Dot comes with the $100-a-month Pro plan and with Business Premium. The OpenAI Developers account posted a demo clip that had about 3,800 likes when we read it.

Wired's reviewer said they had tried both agents and suspected readers would too. Not everyone is relaxed. Cryptographer Matthew Green wrote that independently deployed personal agents such as Muse supply the ingredients of an agent worm, in a post Simon Willison quoted. Green's scenario is a warning, not a report of an attack.
