Musk aims to double Colossus 2's Nvidia chip count
Musk says a further 660,000 Nvidia chips could come online by December, taking the cluster to roughly 1.21 million and serving external customers including Anthropic and Google.
Elon Musk said xAI's Colossus 2 computing cluster could more than double its Nvidia chip count by the end of the year, Bloomberg reported. The cluster currently runs 110,000 GB200s and 440,000 GB300s.
Musk laid out a rollout schedule: another 220,000 GB300 chips due online next week, a further 220,000 in November, and a final 220,000 in late December "if we get lucky," according to the report. Fully deployed, the cluster would approach 1.21 million chips total.
xAI folded into SpaceX in February. Colossus's spare capacity has since gone to outside customers rather than sitting idle between Grok training runs, Bloomberg reported, though the report did not detail what share of total capacity that represents.
Two of those customers are Anthropic and Google, both rivals to Musk's Grok models on the model side. They now rent time on the cluster alongside xAI's own training runs, according to the report.
