OpenAI adds $500 Pro plan and Ultrafast tier at 300 tokens a second

OpenAI says Ultrafast speeds up GPT-6 Astra to 300 tokens per second in Codex, costs 6x the standard rate, and needs the new $500-a-month Pro 500.

OpenAI announced Ultrafast on Tuesday, a premium speed tier it says generates up to 300 tokens per second in Codex, up to eight times faster than standard, and up to six times faster in the API. GPT-6 Astra Ultrafast is available in the API today, and OpenAI says GPT-6.1 Sol will follow soon. Sam Altman wrote that he never wants to go back.

The speed carries a price. The Decoder reports Ultrafast costs six times the standard rate, or $60 per million input tokens and $300 per million output tokens for Astra. Commentator kimmonismus called it good but pricy. In ChatGPT Work and Codex, access comes only through Pro 500, a $500-a-month plan with 25 times the usage of Plus, according to OpenAI.

The launch came with a cut elsewhere. The Next Web reports that from October 30 the $200 Pro plan drops to 10 times Plus usage from 20 times, and weekly GPT-6 Pro chat messages fall from 200 to 100. Current subscribers keep their limits through October 29 and get a one-time $2,500 usage credit that expires December 31.

OpenAI says it will not bring back the five-hour usage limit on Pro 200 and has reopened sign-ups for it. Developer Theo said he upgraded to the $500 plan and will report on usage. He also said the $200 tier's earlier changes still deserve scrutiny. Independent speed tests of Ultrafast have not been published yet.
