Perplexity brings local agent to Windows PCs on AMD Ryzen AI Max
The company says Portable Computer now runs on AMD's Ryzen AI Max series, after launching on Nvidia RTX cards earlier this year.
Perplexity said on Thursday that Portable Computer, its local agent runtime, is now available for Windows on AMD Ryzen AI Max Series processors. The company said the agent works with a user's connected apps and local files, and can run scheduled tasks entirely on the device.
That is Perplexity's account of its own product. The company published no benchmark alongside the post, and no independent test of the AMD build has appeared. Aravind Srinivas, Perplexity's chief executive, posted separately to welcome AMD to what he called the Perplexity Computer local AI ecosystem.
The newsletter AlphaSignal, which covered the release on Thursday, said the local stack runs a 27-billion-parameter model — either Perplexity's own PPLX 27B or a Qwen 27B — behind an agent harness, planner and tool router. It put the hardware requirement at 24GB of memory addressable by the integrated GPU, matching the bar Perplexity set for Nvidia RTX cards.
AlphaSignal said the feature is for Pro and Max subscribers, that local runs do not draw on Perplexity's cloud credits, and that escalation to hosted frontier models is gated behind explicit permission. Neither Perplexity nor AMD has confirmed those details publicly, and the machines Perplexity lists as compatible are not all shipping in the same configuration.
Perplexity's connectors for the local agent cover Gmail, Outlook, Slack, GitHub, Google Drive, OneDrive and Word alongside local files, according to AlphaSignal. Perplexity did not say how many machines meet the memory bar.
