Shopify lets AI agents complete purchases at checkout
The company added three new WebMCP tools that let browser-based agents read, update and complete a Shopify checkout without scraping the page, TechCrunch reported.
Shopify said it is expanding its WebMCP support to checkout, including Shop Pay, TechCrunch reported Monday. The move lets browser-based AI agents complete a purchase with a buyer's authorization. That replaces the earlier approach of relying on screenshots or scraping a webpage. The rollout adds three tools, named get_checkout, update_checkout and complete_checkout, letting an agent read a checkout screen and change details such as address or delivery options.
Gil Greenberg, Shopify's staff product manager for agentic commerce, told TechCrunch that "shopping with an agent shouldn't feel like watching paint dry." The feature builds on Shopify's existing hosted MCP server. It also uses the Universal Commerce Protocol, a structured API Shopify says is meant to keep transactions and required disclosures accurate.
TechCrunch named Meta's Muse and the startup Instinct as agents with direct partnerships tied to the launch. Shopify said the checkout tools are rolling out to all eligible merchants, without giving a specific completion date for the rollout.
The launch follows AI agents from companies such as Meta and OpenAI gaining the ability to act on a user's behalf inside ordinary websites. That moves checkout from a manual click-through process to something an agent can complete unattended. Shopify did not say what share of transactions it expects such agents to handle.
