Sony brings AI upscaling to the standard PS5 with QSSR
Sony says QSSR, a lighter version of the PS5 Pro's PSSR built with AMD, arrives today as a graphics option in Marvel's Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei.
Sony Interactive Entertainment announced QSSR, short for Quick Spectral Super Resolution, an AI upscaler for the standard PlayStation 5. Daniel Craig, a principal engineer in graphics R&D at Sony, wrote on the PlayStation Blog on 1 October that Marvel's Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei are patched that day to offer it.
Sony describes QSSR as a lighter version of PSSR, the upscaler that until now ran only on the PS5 Pro. It rests on two changes, the post says: a streamlined neural network and a hand-tuned implementation for the PS5's hardware. Sony credits Project Amethyst, its AI graphics collaboration with AMD.
Sony says QSSR improves image detail and stability on the base console. PSSR "remains the gold standard" on the Pro, it adds. Insomniac Games said QSSR "adds more pixel-level clarity and stability to our environments." Sucker Punch said it resolves fine detail with temporal stability "not previously possible on PS5."
Sony says it will offer QSSR broadly to PlayStation developers, so more titles could follow. Every performance claim so far comes from Sony and two studios it works with. We have not seen independent image-quality or frame-rate tests, and the post as we read it names no other games.
