Xi says US and China must keep AI under human control
At a White House arrival ceremony, China's leader called the two countries the leading AI nations, with a shared responsibility for the technology.
Xi Jinping said on Thursday that China and the United States are the leading nations in AI and share a responsibility for how it develops. He was speaking at a White House arrival ceremony at the start of a state visit that runs from 23 to 25 September.
Xi said the two countries "have both the capability and responsibility to develop and manage AI for good", and should "ensure the development of AI is always under human control". Bloomberg reported the remarks, in a piece filed by Jeff Mason, Hadriana Lowenkron and Nectar Gan.
The two governments disagree on what that would mean. Trump has argued for unfettered development to hold the American lead, and has called warnings of an existential threat from AI a "hoax". Beijing has criticised United States export controls on semiconductors, which it says constrain Chinese companies.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said the two countries had agreed to extend their trade truce by about two months, to 10 January. No agreement on AI itself was announced at the ceremony, according to the report.
