OpenAI gives ChatGPT Voice plugins, opens Work tab on phones

OpenAI said on Tuesday that ChatGPT Voice can now use plugins, including a user's email, calendar and Slack, and that it can be driven by GPT-6 Astra, Sol and Luna. The company said Voice also works in ChatGPT Work on web and mobile, where it can create documents, decks, sites and spreadsheets.

TechCrunch reported the mobile side separately. Plus and Pro subscribers get the Work tab on their phones for agentic tasks, it said, while Free and Go users can work with plugins and connected apps. The rollout runs on GPT-Live, the conversational model OpenAI put in the desktop app in July, according to the report.

The claims about what Voice can do are OpenAI's own, and nobody outside the company has tested the feature set yet. OpenAI opened its post with "We heard you loud and clear", which reads as a response to complaints that Voice had been cut off from the rest of the product.

Thomas Sottiaux, who works at OpenAI, said he had grown used to calling ChatGPT to check email, do some coding and manage his calendar, and that it works across third-party plugins as well as OpenAI's own. His post had drawn more than 1,100 likes by Tuesday evening.

Conversations can move between devices. A user may start one on a phone and resume it on desktop, TechCrunch said, and voice replies now carry richer text output with a switch between text and speech. OpenAI did not give a date for wider availability.
