Lab chiefs call to slow frontier development, and Asian AI stocks fall

Several frontier laboratory chief executives, among them Anthropic's Dario Amodei, have argued publicly for slowing the pace of AI development. The position was set out in an essay and echoed by others in the industry this week.
Asian stocks linked to AI fell afterwards, Reuters reported. Investors appear to have read the statements as a signal about how quickly the sector intends to move, which is a different question from whether the argument is correct.
The practical content is thinner than the framing suggests. TechCrunch noted that the executives have not said what pacing would mean in operational terms, whether it binds anyone who declines to join, or how it would be verified from outside.
The same companies are simultaneously expanding. Anthropic announced a billion-dollar evaluation partnership and confirmed a biology laboratory in the same week, which is the tension critics point to when the argument is made by the firms setting the pace.
The essay is on the record. What follows from it is not, and no laboratory has published a commitment that could be checked against its own releases.
