Qualcomm says top Snapdragon chip runs 30‑billion‑parameter model on device
The Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 and a standard Gen 6 are the company's first phone processors built on a 2-nanometre process.
Qualcomm launched two flagship smartphone processors at its Snapdragon Summit in Maui on Tuesday, both built on a 2-nanometre process. The company said the higher tier, the Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6, can run a 30-billion-parameter mixture-of-experts model on the handset itself.
The SemiconductorsX account, posting from the summit, said Qualcomm split its flagship line in two, with the extra part carrying a 5-gigahertz Oryon core and 8K video capture. TechCrunch reported the Extreme part will appear first in Motorola's Signature 27, which is expected to reach general availability this year.
SemiconductorsX put the Extreme part at 13% better CPU performance than the previous generation and the standard Gen 6 at 10%. On graphics it gave 44% for the Extreme and 37% for the standard part. The figures come from Qualcomm's own summit presentation and could not be checked independently.
The on-device model claim is Qualcomm's own. TechCrunch noted that Apple released a 20-billion-parameter mixture-of-experts model at its developer conference in June. Qualcomm chief executive Cristiano Amon said the company is switching from a smartphone-centric to an agent-centric experience, and that smartphones are not going to disappear.
