Trump says he will form an AI Force and name an AI czar
The announcement came in a Truth Social post that listed criticism of AI among what the president called hoaxes generated by the radical left.
President Donald Trump said on Saturday that he is forming an AI Force and will name an AI czar in the near future. He compared it to Space Force, the military branch he created in his first term, and made the announcement in a Truth Social post rather than an executive order.
Reuters and Fox reported the post on Saturday. The White House site carries no announcement of either the force or the czar, and its most recent item is dated Friday. Trump did not say what the AI Force would be, who would staff it, or whether it needs legislation.
The post gives one purpose for the force. After saying the administration will not hinder or stifle the industry, Trump wrote that it would also be looking for “BAD”, using what he called the already existing criminal and civil justice system. He did not say what would count as bad.
Trump placed opposition to AI in a list of what he called hoaxes by the radical left, alongside Russia, Ukraine, global warming and two impeachments. He wrote that it began with an attack on data centres, which he said had largely failed, and that critics are now going straight at AI.
He also said AI could be as much as 25 percent of the country's gross domestic product, without giving a timeframe or a basis for the figure. The post follows calls from several lab chiefs, among them Anthropic's Dario Amodei, to slow frontier development. No AI company appears to have commented yet.
