The domain dot.com redirects to Grok's download page, and the internet is convinced xAI bought it to needle OpenAI's new Dots agent.
After OpenAI launched its Dots agent on Tuesday, X users noticed dot.com redirects to Grok's download page, TechCrunch reported. Whois records show the domain changed hands in July 2026, and many read the redirect as a prank aimed at OpenAI.
An X user, @birdabo, appears to have been first to spot it. Their viral post said OpenAI had just announced Dots and that SpaceXAI had bought dot.com, which redirects straight to the Grok bot download page, according to TechCrunch. The reaction it describes was mostly amusement.
TechCrunch noted a duller explanation is possible. xAI could have bought the domain to catch misspelled searches, treating dot as a typo for bot. But the outlet said xAI does not appear to own similar domains such as bot.com or vot.com, which weakens that reading.
xAI had not commented when TechCrunch published, and the outlet said it had asked. The July transfer date means the purchase predates Dots' launch, so it could be a coincidence. Nobody has shown that xAI knew the launch date or chose the redirect with OpenAI in mind.
The episode adds to a steady exchange between the two companies and their owners. The trolling claim is unconfirmed. It rests on timing and social media speculation, not on anything xAI has said.
